Questions our customers ask
What is the difference between a Funeral Plan and arranging a cremation?
When we talk about arranging a cremation, we're referring to the service we provide at the point of need. If someone has passed away, we're on hand 24 hours a day to take your call, and help you to arrange the cremation.
We also offer a Funeral Plan which allows you to pre-pay for a direct cremation so you can secure our services whenever they're needed in the future. More people in the UK choose our plan than any other, and while reasons vary, it's often seen as a way to beat rising inflation and secure some peace of mind. Pure Cremation is proud to serve Scotland from our office in East Kilbride, as well as the whole of England and Wales from our head office in Andover.
We always send our own staff to look after each client, whether that’s on our doorstep or several hundred miles away. You will be given a realistic time of arrival and all the advice you need to know that your loved one is in good hands, right from the first phone call.
Unattended cremations for clients who pass away in Scotland will take place at Clyde Coast and Garnock Valley Crematorium or The Hurlet Crematorium. Cremations for clients in England or Wales will take place at Charlton Park Crematorium.
How long does it take to arrange a Pure Cremation funeral?
The initial call with us will take around 20 minutes, a member of our friendly team will take key information from yourself and complete the application for cremation for you.
The cremation will usually take place 10-14 days from instruction, but is reliant on receiving all of the necessary paperwork from all parties. We will keep you updated on the progress every step of the way.
We then aim to hand-return the ashes of your loved one within 14 days of cremation.
What are your business hours?
If someone has died and you need to arrange a cremation – you can call our team 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0800 1303 559.
When will you collect?
Urgent collection (when someone dies at home)
From the moment you call us, we will keep you informed of an expected arrival time. Paperwork is obtained later, ensuring no delays for collection.
Non-urgent collection (when someone dies in hospital)
From the moment you call us, we aim to collect within 10 days. However, this is always dependent on obtaining the necessary paperwork from all parties involved. We will keep you updated on progress every step of the way.
When someone dies in a care home, community hospital or hospice, collection could be urgent or non-urgent depending on the facilities.
Do you need a death certificate to arrange a funeral?
In Scotland we require a form 14, in order to proceed with a cremation. This is supplied by the Registrar. It’s an important document as the cremation cannot take place without it.
Usually, the medical professionals who were attending to the deceased will notify the Registrar of the death in the first instance. They’ll give the Registrar your contact details, so you can be contacted to register the death.
When you speak to the Registrar, you can let them know to send the form 14 to us directly at scotland@purecremation.co.uk . You can also ask to use the Tell Us Once service. This service tells all the government organisations about the death in one go, which should make things easier for you.
This should all be done within 8 days of the death taking place.
After you’ve spoken with the Registrar, they’ll also send you an abbreviated death certificate. You don’t need to worry about sending this to us – we only need the form 14.
Can I use my local crematorium?
However, for an extra £250, we offer the option for up to 12 people to spend 20 minutes saying goodbye at either Clyde Coast and Garnock Valley Crematorium or The Hurlet Crematorium. This includes your choice of music. The time of the committal will be given by the crematoria and confirmed with the applicant at the time of booking.
Where does the cremation take place?
Pure Cremation offers an unrivalled continuity of care, from the first phone call to the hand delivery of the ashes. If you pass away in Scotland, then the cremation will take place at the stunning Clyde Coast and Garnock Valley Crematorium or The Hurlet Crematorium. Unattended cremations for people who pass away in England or Wales, will take place at our own beautiful Charlton Park Crematorium, in the Hampshire countryside. Cremations in Northern Ireland take place at Lakelands Crematorium.
In all cases, the cremation is performed by dedicated staff, who treat everyone with the same level of dignified, respect and care.
Can I attend a cremation if I want to?
Although there will be no service of any kind, some families still wish to be present at the crematorium.
For an extra £250, we offer the option for up to 12 people to spend 20 minutes saying goodbye at either Clyde Coast & Garnock Valley Crematorium or The Hurlet Crematorium. This includes your choice of music. The time of the committal will be given by the crematoria and confirmed with the applicant at the time of booking. Please call on: 0800 1303 559 for more details.
9 out of 10 Pure Cremations are unattended, meaning no mourners are present. Our caring staff will carry out the process with the utmost respect and without anyone present – we then return the ashes by hand, or scatter them in our garden of remembrance.
What will the ashes be returned in?
Ashes are returned in a specially designed, biodegradable urn wrapped in a beautiful landscape image. This is more sustainable due to being made of renewable raw material, and has a CO2 saving of more than 20%. The urn is included in your price.
How can I be sure the ashes returned will be my loved one's?
Pure Cremation is proud to go above and beyond the strict UK rules for identity checking. Each person we look after is given a unique identification code, which is scanned at each stage of care.
- Each coffin’s identity is checked when it arrives at the crematorium. All data must match the documents submitted to the crematorium before it can be accepted
- This identity is checked again, before the coffin enters the cremation chamber, and a ceramic disc bearing the specific cremation number is placed on the coffin
- The identity is checked and logged again once the remains and the ceramic disc are removed from the cremation chamber
- This identity is logged once more when the remains go through the final step: preparation to return to the family
Pure Cremation is one of the only direct cremation providers in the UK to use this visible proof of identity.
What happens when we bring someone into our care?
We collect your loved one from the place where they have died and transport them to our purpose-built client care facility here in Scotland.
Our team will look after your loved one with dignity and respect, from the moment we bring them into our care, through the cremation itself and until the ashes are returned to you.
